Choosing a wall color you will still like in a year

Paint is the cheapest change in any room and the one people regret most, because the thing you choose from is never the thing you end up living with. A chip is two inches of flat card under shop lighting. A wall is forty square feet under your own windows, next to your own floor, at seven in the evening.

Why the chip lies

Color is relative. The same grey reads blue next to a warm oak floor and green next to a cool tile. Scale changes it too — a shade looks roughly two steps darker and more saturated once it covers a whole wall, which is why so many greys dry down to lilac and so many whites go yellow. The only honest test is the color on your wall, against your furniture, in your light.

North, south, east, west

North-facing rooms get cool, steady light all day, which pushes cool colors toward grey and can make a crisp white feel clinical; warm whites and colors with a little depth hold up better. South-facing rooms get warm light that flatters almost everything and can make yellows go brassy. East light is warm in the morning and flat by afternoon, west is the opposite — so test a color at the hour you actually use the room.

Finish changes the color

Matte absorbs light and reads darker and softer, eggshell gives a slight sheen that lifts the color a little, and satin or gloss bounces light and reads brighter and harder. The same code in matte and in satin are visibly different colors on the wall. When you describe a color, say the finish too.

One wall or all four

An accent wall works when there is a reason for it — the wall behind the bed, the chimney breast, the wall you see from the doorway. An accent wall on a random wall reads as indecision. If the room is small, color on all four walls usually makes it feel larger than one dark wall and three pale ones, because there is no hard edge to measure the space against.

The mistakes that cost the most

  • Testing on a white wall. A patch of color surrounded by old white paint always looks darker and more intense than it will once the whole wall is done. Paint a large patch, or test it on screen where the whole wall changes at once.
  • Ignoring the trim. Walls and trim are a pair. A warm white wall against a cool white trim looks dirty, and most people blame the wall color. Decide both together.
  • Matching to a screenshot. A color on someone else's wall is their light, their floor and their camera. Use it as a direction, not a specification.
  • Forgetting the ceiling. A ceiling in flat builder white under a warm wall color reads blue. Taking the wall color to about a quarter strength on the ceiling fixes it for the price of a tin.

What a preview cannot tell you

What a preview will not tell you is how the paint covers, how it holds up to scrubbing, or whether the surface underneath needs work. It will tell you whether the color is right — which is the part that costs two days and a repaint to get wrong.

Frequently asked questions

Can I preview a specific paint color?

Yes — type the color in the box above the button, for example “repaint the walls sage green”, and the AI applies it to your own walls.

Will it keep my furniture?

The AI keeps the room's architecture — walls, windows, doors and camera angle — and restyles the space. For a pure color change, say so in the text box: “only repaint the walls, keep everything else”.

Is it free?

Yes. Every visitor gets a free redesign in the browser with no signup and no credit card. Unlimited previews are in the free DecorIn app.

What photo works best?

A clear, well-lit shot from a corner so the AI can see the whole wall. Avoid heavy blur and extreme angles.
