Designing a kitchen that works
Kitchens are the most expensive room to get wrong and the one where AI previews earn their keep fastest — a cabinet color you dislike costs a weekend in paint or five figures in replacement. Layout is usually fixed by plumbing, so most kitchen decisions are surface decisions.
Kitchen layouts, by situation
Galley
Two parallel runs. Efficient to cook in and the hardest to make feel generous. Keep upper cabinets on one side only, and run the flooring lengthways to stretch the space.
L-shape
The most common and the most forgiving. The inside corner is the weak point — a carousel or a deep drawer stack saves it from becoming dead storage.
U-shape
Excellent work triangle, prone to feeling enclosed. Removing uppers on one leg in favour of open shelving or a window transforms it.
Island
Needs about 42 to 48 inches of clearance on all sides to work. Below that it stops being an island and becomes an obstacle — a peninsula is the better answer in a tight room.
The mistakes that cost you most
- Choosing cabinet color from a chip. A color that reads warm on a two-inch sample reads completely different across twenty square feet under your kitchen's lighting. Preview it at full scale.
- Ignoring the work triangle. Sink, hob and fridge should form a triangle with no leg longer than about nine feet and no traffic path cutting through it.
- Under-lighting the counter. Ceiling lights put your own shadow on the worktop. Under-cabinet lighting is the highest-value upgrade in most kitchens.
- Matching every finish. All-matching cabinetry, hardware, tap and appliances reads as a showroom. One deliberate contrast — hardware against cabinet, or a different island color — is what makes it look designed.
How to photograph your kitchen for AI
Shoot from the doorway or the corner opposite the main run so the cabinetry and at least one worktop are visible. Clear the counters first — AI reads a cluttered worktop as part of the design and will often keep the clutter. Daylight, no flash.
Which styles suit a kitchen
Shaker cabinetry carries farmhouse, traditional and transitional looks and is the safest starting point. Flat-slab fronts read modern, minimalist and Japandi. Industrial suits kitchens with exposed brick or high ceilings. Coastal works where there is genuine daylight and struggles in a north-facing room. Luxury depends on material — marble and brass — more than on layout.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Kitchen designer really free?
Yes. You can redesign your kitchen photo in your browser for free, with no signup and no credit card. For HD downloads and unlimited styles, the DecorIn iOS app is a free download.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Upload a photo, pick a style, and see your redesigned kitchen right away.
Will it keep my kitchen's layout?
Yes — the AI keeps your walls, windows and perspective and restyles the kitchens with new furniture, color and decor.
What photo works best?
A clear, well-lit shot taken from a corner so the AI can see the whole kitchen. Avoid heavy blur and extreme angles.
What is the most cost-effective kitchen change?
Cabinet paint or refacing, followed by hardware and lighting. If the cabinet boxes are structurally sound, new doors and paint deliver most of the visual change at a fraction of replacement cost.
What kitchen cabinet color is timeless?
Warm white, soft greige and muted green-gray have held up longest. Very saturated or very trend-driven colors date fastest, and cabinetry is the most expensive thing in the room to redo.
How do I test a kitchen color before committing?
Preview it on a photo of your actual kitchen rather than a sample. Lighting, cabinet volume and the surrounding worktop all change how a color reads, and none of that is visible on a chip.
Can AI redesign a kitchen without moving the plumbing?
A tool that preserves layout will keep the sink, appliances and cabinet runs in place and change only the finishes. That is the realistic use of AI in a kitchen, since plumbing and gas positions are what make kitchen work expensive.
