Living Room guide

Designing a living room that works

The living room is the hardest room in most homes to get right, because it has to do four jobs at once — seating guests, watching something, walking through, and storing the clutter of daily life. Most living rooms fail on layout long before they fail on style.

Living Room layouts, by situation

Long and narrow

The most common awkward shape in row houses and older apartments. Pushing everything flat against the two long walls is the instinct, and it is what makes the room read as a corridor. Float the sofa perpendicular to the long wall to break the line, split the space into two zones, and put something substantial at the far end so the eye stops there.

Square

No natural focal point, so every arrangement feels like it is floating. Create the focal point the room refuses to give you — a large piece of art, a bold wall, a substantial bookcase — then arrange around it. A round rug or round coffee table softens the geometry.

Open-plan

The living zone has no edges and furniture floats without belonging anywhere. Rugs are the walls: one per zone, large enough that the front legs of every piece sit on it. Back the sofa toward the dining area and it becomes a soft boundary.

Fireplace off-center

Centring on the fireplace leaves the room lopsided; centring on the room ignores the fireplace. Pick one and commit — half-committed asymmetry reads as a mistake. Balance the opposite side with visual weight rather than a mirror image.

The mistakes that cost you most

  • The rug is too small. Almost every living room rug is undersized. At minimum the front legs of all seating should sit on it. A rug floating in the middle like a postage stamp makes the room look smaller.
  • Everything against the walls. Pushing furniture to the perimeter does not create space, it creates a waiting room. Pulling seating a few inches off the wall reads as deliberate.
  • Seating that cannot hold a conversation. If two people have to shout across the room, the layout has failed regardless of how it photographs. Keep facing seats within about eight feet.
  • Lighting from one ceiling fixture. A single overhead light flattens the room. Three sources at different heights is the fix, and it costs less than any furniture.

How to photograph your living room for AI

Stand in a corner so two walls and the floor are visible — that gives the AI the perspective it needs to keep your room's geometry. Shoot in daylight with the lamps off, hold the phone at chest height and keep it level. A photo taken from the doorway looking straight down the room is the most common bad input, because it flattens depth.

Which styles suit a living room

Living rooms carry almost any style, which is why people freeze. Scandinavian and Japandi work well in rooms that are small or short on daylight, because the pale palettes give light back. Mid-century modern suits rooms with good proportions and a focal wall. Industrial needs ceiling height to avoid feeling oppressive. Traditional and luxury reward rooms with existing architectural detail — cornicing, panelling, a real fireplace.

Text-to-Image Editing

Don't like a detail? Just type it — "add a fireplace" or "make the walls sage green" — and the AI redesigns your room to match, no re-uploading needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is this Living Room designer really free?

Yes. You can redesign your living room photo in your browser for free, with no signup and no credit card. For HD downloads and unlimited styles, the DecorIn iOS app is a free download.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Upload a photo, pick a style, and see your redesigned living room right away.

Will it keep my living room's layout?

Yes — the AI keeps your walls, windows and perspective and restyles the living rooms with new furniture, color and decor.

What photo works best?

A clear, well-lit shot taken from a corner so the AI can see the whole living room. Avoid heavy blur and extreme angles.

How do I arrange a living room with a TV and a fireplace on different walls?

Stop making the TV the focal point. Arrange the seating for conversation around the fireplace, and place the TV where it is visible from that seating — a corner mount is the most underused answer. A room arranged around two competing focal points never settles.

What size rug do I need for a living room?

Bigger than feels right. The minimum is large enough for the front legs of all seating to sit on it; ideally all legs sit on it with a margin of floor showing around the edge. In a long narrow room, leave a margin on both long walls so the room reads wider.

How far should the sofa be from the TV?

A rough rule is 1.5 to 2.5 times the screen's diagonal. For a 55-inch TV that is roughly 7 to 11 feet. If you cannot achieve that, the screen is too large for the room.

Can AI redesign a living room without changing the layout?

Yes, if the tool preserves geometry. DecorIn keeps walls, windows, doors and the camera angle and restyles furniture, color and decor around them. Tools that regenerate the whole image will move your windows.
