Patio guide

Designing a patio that works

Patios succeed or fail on zoning and shade. A large paved area with furniture pushed to the edges is the most common patio, and it is the one nobody sits on.

Patio layouts, by situation

Single seating zone

Anchor it with an outdoor rug and keep it away from the back door so the approach stays clear.

Dining plus lounge

Two zones, dining nearer the kitchen door and lounge further out. This is what makes a large patio usable rather than empty.

Narrow side return

A long bench and a narrow table. Do not attempt a round table in a narrow space.

Sloped or split level

Use the level change as the zone boundary rather than fighting it — steps make a natural edge.

The mistakes that cost you most

  • Furniture around the perimeter. The same mistake as indoors, and more obvious outdoors. Pull the seating in.
  • No shade. An unshaded patio is unusable for most of the day it was built for.
  • Lighting at ground level only. Overhead lighting — string lights, a pergola, wall lights — is what makes a patio work after dark.
  • Under-planting. Hard landscaping without planting reads as a car park. Planting at two or three heights fixes it faster than more furniture.

How to photograph your patio for AI

Shoot from the house looking out, with some of the paving in the foreground so the AI reads the surface and scale. Overcast light is better than midday sun.

Which styles suit a patio

Coastal, farmhouse and contemporary all work outdoors. Mediterranean and bohemian suit patios with strong sun. Luxury translates through material — stone, built-in seating, a proper pergola — rather than through furniture.

Text-to-Image Editing

Frequently asked questions

Is this Patio designer really free?

Yes. You can redesign your patio photo in your browser for free, with no signup and no credit card. For HD downloads and unlimited styles, the DecorIn iOS app is a free download.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Upload a photo, pick a style, and see your redesigned patio right away.

Will it keep my patio's layout?

Yes — the AI keeps your walls, windows and perspective and restyles the patios with new furniture, color and decor.

What photo works best?

A clear, well-lit shot taken from a corner so the AI can see the whole patio. Avoid heavy blur and extreme angles.

How do I make a patio feel like a room?

Anchor the seating with an outdoor rug, add overhead structure or lighting, and plant at two or three heights around the edge. Enclosure and overhead interest are what turn paving into a room.

What is the best patio lighting?

Layered and overhead — string lights or a pergola for ambient light, plus low-level path or step lighting for safety. Ground-level lighting alone leaves the space feeling flat after dark.

How much space does patio dining need?

The same clearance as indoors — about 36 inches behind each chair, and more where people walk past seated guests. Outdoor furniture is usually bulkier, so measure rather than estimate.

Can AI design a patio from a photo?

Yes. Outdoor spaces work well for AI preview because the changes — furniture, planting, pergola, lighting — are additive and easy to describe.
