Seeing a piece in your room before you buy it
Furniture is the most expensive guess in decorating. A sofa is a four-figure decision made from a photograph taken in a showroom twice the size of your living room, and the return policy usually involves getting it back down the stairs. Seeing the piece in your own room first is the cheapest insurance there is.
Measure before you look
Every swap starts with three numbers: the length of the wall it sits against, the width of the route it has to travel to get there, and the gap you need to walk past it. Thirty inches is a comfortable walkway, eighteen inches between sofa and coffee table, and a doorway narrower than the piece's smallest dimension is a dead end no matter how good it looks.
Describe it the way the listing does
The words in a product description are the words a model understands: material, color, seat count, leg style, arm shape. “Cream bouclé three-seater with light oak tapered legs” gives it something to draw. “Nicer sofa” gives it nothing, and it will invent something you did not ask for.
Scale is what goes wrong, not style
Most furniture mistakes are size mistakes. A sofa two feet too long turns a room into a corridor; a rug two sizes too small makes everything on it look like it is floating. When you preview a piece, judge it against the window, the door frame and the ceiling height rather than against how it looks on its own.
Swap one piece at a time
Changing the sofa and the rug and the coffee table together tells you nothing about which change did the work. One piece per attempt, and keep the version you liked before trying the next.
The mistakes that cost the most
- Buying the set. A matching sofa, loveseat and chair from one range is the fastest way to make a room look like a showroom floor. One anchor piece and two things that disagree with it politely reads as a home.
- Forgetting what is behind it. A tall-backed sofa under a window blocks the light that made you like the room. Check the piece against the wall it will actually sit on.
- Ignoring the legs. Furniture you can see the floor under reads lighter and makes a small room feel bigger. Skirted bases do the opposite. It is the cheapest lever on perceived space.
- Choosing fabric from a screen. Color and scale preview well; texture and durability do not. Order a swatch for anything you will sit on every day.
What a preview cannot tell you
A preview cannot tell you how a cushion feels, how a frame is built, or whether the fabric survives a dog. It tells you whether the piece belongs in the room at that size and in that color, which is what people get wrong before delivery day.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change just one piece of furniture?
Yes — that is what the text box is for. “Change the sofa, keep the room” tells the AI to restyle that piece and leave the rest as it is.
Will the room still look like mine?
Yes. The AI keeps your walls, windows, doors, floor and camera perspective and changes the furnishings you ask about.
Is it free?
Yes — one free redesign per visitor in the browser, no signup and no credit card. The free DecorIn app has unlimited swaps and spot edits.
What photo works best?
A clear, well-lit shot from a corner, with the piece you want to change fully visible.
