What Size Sofa Do I Need? The Room Size Guide

A sofa is the most expensive thing most people put in a living room, and the most common one to get wrong — too big to get through the door, too small for the room, or too deep to sit in comfortably. Here's how to get it right.

The short answer

A standard sofa is 72 to 90 inches long (84 inches is the most common), 32 to 40 inches deep and has a seat about 17 to 19 inches high. A good rule: the sofa should be about two-thirds the length of the wall it sits on.

Before you buy, measure the doorways, hallways and stairs it has to pass through — and compare them to the sofa's height and diagonal depth, not just its width.

Seat height on most sofas is 17 to 19 inches. Lower (16 inches) feels lounge-y and modern; higher (19+) is easier to get in and out of.

What size sofa fits your room

The simplest rule: the sofa should take up about two-thirds of the wall. A 12-foot wall (144 inches) fits a sofa of about 96 inches. Leave at least 18 inches on each end for side tables or walking space.

Tape it out. Mark the sofa's length and depth on the floor with painter's tape. Then walk around it. If you have to squeeze past to get to a door or window, it's too big.

Seat depth and comfort

The overall depth of a sofa (front to back) is different from seat depth (front edge of the cushion to the back cushion). Seat depth is what decides comfort.

  • 20–22 inches seat depth: upright and formal. Good for shorter people and for conversation.
  • 22–24 inches: the sweet spot for most adults.
  • 24+ inches (deep seat): lounging and napping. Great for tall people; shorter people may need extra pillows behind them.
  • Arm height: about 24 to 26 inches from the floor. Lower arms make a sofa look sleeker; higher arms feel cozier.

Will it fit through the door?

This is the step that causes the most returns. Measure every doorway, hallway, stairwell and elevator the sofa needs to pass through.

  1. Measure the door opening — width and height, with the door open (remove it from the hinges if needed for extra inches).
  2. Find the sofa's diagonal depth. Many retailers list it. If not: measure from the top back corner to the front bottom of the seat cushion. If the diagonal depth is smaller than the door's height, the sofa can usually go through tilted on its back.
  3. Compare the sofa's height and depth to the door width. Sofas usually go through doors on their side or tilted, so it's the height and depth that matter, not the length.
  4. Check turns. Tight hallways and stair landings are the real problem. Choose a sofa with removable legs, or a modular sectional that comes in pieces.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a sofa?

A standard three-seat sofa is about 80 to 90 inches long, with 84 inches the most common, 32 to 40 inches deep, and about 17 to 19 inches high at the seat.

How long should a sofa be for my wall?

About two-thirds the length of the wall, leaving at least 18 inches on each end. A 12-foot wall fits a sofa of about 96 inches.

What is a comfortable sofa seat depth?

Around 22 to 24 inches suits most adults. 20 to 22 inches is more upright; 24 inches or more is better for lounging and taller people.

How big should a coffee table be compared to the sofa?

About two-thirds the length of the sofa, at the same height as the seat or 1 to 2 inches lower, placed 14 to 18 inches from the sofa.

How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the door width and height and compare them with the sofa's height and diagonal depth. If the diagonal depth is less than the door height, it can usually be tilted through. Also check tight hallway and stair turns.
