What Size Rug for a Living Room? The Simple Chart
The most common decorating mistake in America is a rug that's too small. Here's exactly which size to buy for every room, and the two-minute way to check it before you spend a dollar.
The short answer
For most living rooms, buy an 8x10 rug. It's big enough for the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it, which is what makes a seating area look pulled together. Go 9x12 if the room is bigger than about 12x15 feet. Only use a 5x8 in a very small room or apartment.
The rule of thumb: leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls, and make the rug wider than your sofa by at least 6 inches on each side.
The rug size chart
Rugs in the US come in a handful of standard sizes. Measure your room, then match it here. When you're between two sizes, pick the bigger one — a rug that's slightly too big almost always looks better than one that's slightly too small.
| Room size (feet) | Best rug size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 x 12 | 5x8 or 6x9 | Front legs of the sofa on the rug, or the rug centered in front of it |
| 10 x 12 to 12 x 15 | 8x10 | The default for most living rooms |
| 12 x 15 to 14 x 18 | 9x12 | Room for front legs of every seat |
| Larger than 14 x 18 | 10x14 or 12x15 | All furniture can sit fully on the rug |
| Open-plan living area | Size to the seating zone, not the room | Use the rug to define where the living room 'ends' |
Living room rules that always work
There are three ways to place a living room rug. One of them works in almost every home.
1. Front legs on (the safe choice)
The rug slides under the front legs of the sofa and every chair. The back legs sit on the floor. This connects all the seats into one group, and it's the reason an 8x10 is the most popular living room size. In a standard room with an 84-inch sofa, it fits perfectly.
2. All legs on (the luxury choice)
Every piece of furniture sits completely on the rug. It looks rich and cozy but needs a big rug — usually 9x12 or larger — and a big room. Keep at least 12 inches of floor showing around the edges, or the rug starts to look like wall-to-wall carpet.
3. No legs on (only for small rooms)
The rug sits in front of the sofa, under the coffee table only. This is the version that most often goes wrong. It only works in a small room, and the rug should still be close enough to the sofa that your feet land on it when you sit.
- Wider than the sofa. The rug should extend at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa, ideally 8 to 12.
- Floor border. Leave 12 to 18 inches of floor showing around the edges in a normal room, 8 inches minimum in a tight one.
- Center it on the seating, not the room. If the sofa is off-center, the rug follows the sofa.
- Use a rug pad. It stops slipping, protects the floor, and makes a cheap rug feel thicker.
What size rug for a bedroom
In a bedroom the rug goes under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, so you step onto something soft on both sides when you get up. Aim for 18 to 24 inches of rug showing on each side of the bed.
| Bed size | Best rug size | Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 5x8 | Under the bed, sticking out on the open side |
| Full | 6x9 | Under the lower two-thirds of the bed |
| Queen | 8x10 | Under the lower two-thirds, nightstands off the rug |
| King / California king | 9x12 | Under the lower two-thirds, 2 feet showing on each side |
Can't fit a big rug? Use two runners (about 2.5 x 8 feet), one on each side of the bed. It's cheaper and does the same job.
What size rug for a dining room
The dining rug has one job: the chair legs must stay on it when someone pulls out to sit down. That means the rug should extend 24 to 36 inches past every edge of the table.
| Table | Seats | Rug size |
|---|---|---|
| Round, 36–48 inches | 4 | 6-foot round or 6x9 |
| Rectangular, 60–72 inches | 4–6 | 8x10 |
| Rectangular, 84–96 inches | 6–8 | 9x12 |
| Rectangular, 108 inches + | 8–10 | 10x14 |
Pick a low, flat-woven or low-pile rug under a dining table. Shag and thick pile trap crumbs and make chairs hard to slide.
Rug mistakes that make a room look small
- The floating postage stamp. A 5x7 in the middle of a big room, touching no furniture. It chops the floor into pieces and makes the whole room feel smaller. This is the number one mistake.
- Rug narrower than the sofa. It looks like it shrank in the wash.
- Wrong direction. In a long room, the rug's long side should run the same way as the sofa.
- Too many small rugs. One large rug calms a room; three small ones make it busy.
- Pattern that fights everything. If your sofa and curtains are patterned, go plain or textured underfoot.

A good wool 9x12 can cost more than the sofa, so it's worth being sure. Two ways to check:
- The tape test. Mark the outline on the floor with painter's tape. It tells you the size.
- The photo test. Take a photo of your room and use DecorIn to swap in a rug (or a whole new look) and see it in your real space. It tells you the color and pattern — the part tape can't.
Do both, and you'll buy the right rug the first time. Planning the whole room? Read our guides to living room layouts and choosing the right sofa size.
Frequently asked questions
What size rug is best for a living room?
An 8x10 rug is the best size for most living rooms. It's large enough for the front legs of the sofa and chairs to rest on it. Choose 9x12 for rooms bigger than about 12 by 15 feet and 5x8 only for very small rooms.
Should the sofa be on the rug?
Ideally the front legs of the sofa sit on the rug and the back legs sit on the floor. This ties the seating together. If the rug is big enough, all four legs can sit on it.
How much floor should show around a rug?
Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls in a typical room, and at least 8 inches in a small room.
Is a 5x8 rug too small for a living room?
In most living rooms, yes. A 5x8 works only in small rooms or apartments, or when it sits under the coffee table close enough to the sofa that your feet land on it.
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
An 8x10 rug placed under the lower two-thirds of a queen bed, with about 18 to 24 inches showing on each side.
How far should a dining rug extend past the table?
24 to 36 inches past every edge of the table, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.
