Christmas Table Setting Ideas: How to Set It Right

A beautiful holiday table is mostly getting the basics right — the place setting, the runner and a centerpiece low enough to talk over — then adding one idea. Here's the layout and five styles to choose from.

The short answer

Forks on the left, knife (blade facing in) and spoon on the right, glasses above the knife, bread plate above the forks, napkin on the plate or left of the forks. Allow about 24 inches per place setting.

Keep the centerpiece under 12 inches tall (or very tall and slim, above eye level), and let a runner hang 6–12 inches over each end of the table.

The place setting

ItemWhere it goes
Charger (optional)Center, about 1 inch from the table edge
Dinner plateOn the charger; salad plate on top if serving salad first
ForksLeft of the plate; salad fork outside, dinner fork inside
KnifeRight of the plate, blade facing the plate
SpoonRight of the knife
Water glassAbove the knife
Wine glass(es)To the right of and slightly below the water glass
Bread plateAbove the forks, butter knife across it
NapkinOn the plate, or left of the forks
Place cardAbove the plate, or on the napkin

Rule of thumb: utensils are used from the outside in, and the bottoms of the utensils line up about an inch from the table edge.

5 holiday table styles

1. Classic

White plates on gold chargers, red or tartan napkins, a fresh evergreen runner with red berries and gold candlesticks.

2. Nordic

Linen tablecloth, stoneware plates, a sprig of pine on each napkin, white candles in brass holders, paper star place cards.

3. Gold & champagne

Ivory linens, gold flatware, glass ornaments scattered down the center, tall taper candles and mercury glass votives.

4. Modern

Bare wood table, black or matte plates, a loose eucalyptus runner, a cluster of white tapers at different heights.

5. Cozy cabin

Buffalo-check napkins, wood chargers, pinecones and small lanterns down the middle, an ornament at each place as a gift.

Small-table tips

  • Skip chargers and bread plates to win back space.
  • Serve from the counter so serving dishes don't crowd the table.
  • Use a narrow runner or a garland laid flat instead of a big centerpiece.
  • Extend with a folding table and one long tablecloth — see hosting in a small space.

Frequently asked questions

How do you set a Christmas table?

Put forks on the left, the knife (blade in) and spoon on the right, glasses above the knife, the bread plate above the forks and the napkin on the plate or left of the forks. Add a runner and a centerpiece under 12 inches tall.

How tall should a Christmas centerpiece be?

Under about 12 inches so guests can see each other, or tall and slim enough to sit above eye level, like taper candles.

How long should a table runner be?

The table length plus 12 to 24 inches, so it hangs 6 to 12 inches over each end.

Where do the glasses go in a place setting?

The water glass sits above the knife, with wine glasses to its right and slightly below.
