Christmas Mantel Ideas: Style It in 5 Layers
The mantel is the most-photographed spot in the house in December, and the easiest to overdo. Decorators build it in five layers. Here's the method — and what to do if there's a TV in the way or no fireplace at all.
The short answer
Build the mantel in layers: 1) garland (about 1.5 times the mantel width so it drapes over the ends), 2) a tall anchor on one or both ends, 3) mid-height pieces, 4) stockings spaced evenly, and 5) light (string lights in the garland plus candles).
TV above the fireplace? Keep the decor below the screen and let the garland run along the mantel only. No fireplace? Use a console table, bookcase or floating shelf the same way.
The 5 layers
- Garland base. A full faux garland (or two thin ones twisted together) along the whole mantel, draping down past each end.
- Anchor with height. A tall element at one end (asymmetric, modern) or both ends (symmetric, traditional): small trees, tall candlesticks, a lantern, branches.
- Fill the middle. A wreath or mirror centered above, then medium items — candles, a few ornaments, small houses — in odd-numbered groups.
- Stockings. Hung from weighted holders or hooks, evenly spaced.
- Light it. Battery micro-lights woven into the garland plus a few flameless candles.
Garland and stocking math
| Mantel width | Garland length | Stockings (comfortable) |
|---|---|---|
| 48 in (4 ft) | 6 ft | 2–3 |
| 60 in (5 ft) | 7–8 ft | 3–4 |
| 72 in (6 ft) | 9 ft | 4–5 |
| 84 in (7 ft) | 10–12 ft | 5–6 |
Space stockings roughly 12–16 inches apart, center to center. For more stockings than fit, hang them from a staircase, a ladder or the back of the sofa.
With a TV above the fireplace
- Keep everything below the screen — nothing that covers it or stands in front of it.
- Make the garland the star: a fuller, longer garland that drapes down both sides.
- Frame the TV, don't fight it: tall elements at each end of the mantel, or garland running up and around the TV on adhesive clips.
- Use the screen: a fireplace or snowfall video on the TV ties it in.
No fireplace? Make a mantel
| Use | How |
|---|---|
| Console table | Garland across the top, a wreath or mirror above, stockings hung with weighted holders |
| Bookcase | Garland along one shelf, stockings hung from the shelf edge |
| Floating shelf | A single long shelf (5–6 ft) styled exactly like a mantel |
| Faux mantel | A freestanding mantel surround with candles or an electric fireplace insert |
| Window | Garland along the sill and a wreath in the window |
Safety
- Never hang garland or stockings over a fire that's in use — or take them down before lighting it.
- Use flameless candles near greenery.
- Check that lights are rated for indoor use and cords aren't pinched.

Frequently asked questions
How do you decorate a mantel for Christmas?
Work in five layers: a full garland, tall anchors at one or both ends, mid-height pieces in odd-numbered groups, evenly spaced stockings, and lights woven through the garland plus candles.
How long should a garland be for a mantel?
About 1.5 times the mantel width, so it drapes over the ends — roughly 9 feet for a 6-foot mantel.
How do you decorate a mantel with a TV above it?
Keep everything below the screen, use a fuller garland that drapes down the sides, frame the TV with tall pieces at each end, and avoid anything that covers the screen.
Where do you hang stockings without a fireplace?
From a console table or bookcase with weighted stocking holders, a floating shelf, a staircase railing, or a faux mantel.
