How to Host Thanksgiving in a Small Space
You don't need a big house to host Thanksgiving. You need to know how many people your table really seats, where the food goes, and what to move out of the way the day before. Here's the math and the layouts.
The short answer
Give each guest about 24 inches of table edge (30 is comfortable). A 72-inch table seats 6; add a folding table to the end to seat 8–10. Leave about 36 inches behind chairs so people can get in and out.
Serve buffet-style from the kitchen counter to free table space, move one or two pieces of furniture out the day before, and keep the centerpiece under 12 inches tall so guests can see each other.
How many people fit at your table
| Table | Comfortable | Tight (holiday) |
|---|---|---|
| 48-in round | 4 | 6 |
| 60-in round | 6 | 8 |
| 60-in rectangle | 4–6 | 6 |
| 72-in rectangle | 6 | 8 |
| 84-in rectangle | 8 | 8–10 |
| 96-in rectangle | 8–10 | 10–12 |
Rule of thumb: 24 inches per person at minimum, 30 inches for comfort, plus about 12 inches at each end of a rectangular table for an end seat. Table legs eat seats — trestle and pedestal tables seat more than four-legged ones.
3 small-space layouts
1. Extend in a line
Butt a folding table against the end of your dining table, cover both with one long tablecloth (or two overlapping), and run it through the living area if needed. Everyone at one table is the most festive option.
2. Angle across the room
In a square room, set the extended table diagonally. You often gain a foot or two at each end, and walkways open up around the corners.
3. Main table + kids' or coffee table
Adults at the dining table, kids at a coffee table with floor cushions in the living room. Keep both within sight of each other.
Make room the day before
- Move one or two pieces out — an armchair, a side table, the coffee table — into a bedroom.
- Leave 36 inches behind chairs where people need to pass, at least 30 inches elsewhere.
- Borrow or rent folding chairs, or use a bench along the wall side of the table (seats more people than chairs).
- Clear the entry for coats — a rolling rack or one bed for coats.
- Plan the after-dinner sitting area: where will everyone sit for pie and football? See living room layouts for conversation groupings.
Where the food goes
- Buffet on the kitchen counter or island — the table stays free for plates and glasses.
- Drinks station away from the kitchen (a bar cart or console) so guests don't crowd the cook.
- A low centerpiece under 12 inches: a runner, mini pumpkins, leaves and candles. Tall arrangements block faces.
- Dessert on a side table later, once dinner plates are cleared.
